Kilimanjaro Tour Overview
The Umbwe Route is known as the most direct, steep, and adventurous path up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is ideal for experienced trekkers or fit climbers looking for a short, challenging, and scenic route with fewer crowds.
This route starts from the southern base of Kilimanjaro at Umbwe Gate and ascends rapidly through a dense rainforest before emerging onto a ridge that provides stunning views of the valleys below. The path then joins the Machame Route at Baranco Camp, continuing through dramatic alpine landscapes, including the famous Baranco Wall, before heading to Karanga and Barafu Camp.
From Barafu Camp, climbers make a midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where breathtaking sunrise views await. The descent follows the Mweka Route through beautiful rainforests back to the park gate.
This 7-day itinerary (including arrival day) ensures good acclimatization, a comfortable pace, and an unforgettable summit experience.
Kilimanjaro Tour Itinerary
Transfer to your hotel in Moshi town (approximately 1 hour drive).
Meet your mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing and equipment check.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi
Register at the park gate and begin the climb through dense rainforest on a steep trail.
The route follows a narrow ridge between two deep valleys.
Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for dinner and overnight.
The forest gradually gives way to heather and moorland.
Reach Baranco Camp with stunning views of Kibo Peak, the Southern Icefields, and the Breach Wall.
Dinner and overnight at Baranco Camp.
Hike through a series of ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp.
Afternoon for rest, acclimatization, and hot meals.
Arrive early, rest, and prepare for the summit hike.
Early dinner and overnight rest before midnight summit start.
Start your final ascent to the summit at midnight.
Climb slowly on switchbacks through heavy scree to Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim.
Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa!
Celebrate and take photos, then descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch and short rest.
Continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Receive your summit certificates from Kilimanjaro National Park.
Transfer back to Moshi hotel for a refreshing shower, lunch, and relaxation.
Later in the day, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
